I purchased the saw because almost everything in my shop is Hitachi. I had been doing a lot of crown and needed the extra cutting height. I got it, no damage, I was happy. I read the reviews and lots of them show up broken. It is heavy, so I bought a Porter Cable Stand, great stand by the way, and set it up. The fence just wouldn't adjust far enough to be 90 degrees from the blade. It was off 3/16 and full length. I called Hitachi service, they suggested I take it to a local Authorized service center. I did, it took two weeks and they got it better but not right. Slide bar was twisted they said. I called the shipper, they are great to deal with.( Tyler Tools) They sent me a new one in two days. They even sent a return slip for the old one. I got it today. Bevel adjustment knob, is broken, fine, I'll get the old one before I ship it. Now the fence issue. This one is close, real close. It is a perfect 90 on right side, and off a 16th on left. The fence just wont come in...

Makita LS1214L 12-Inch Dual Slide Compound Miter Saw with Laser Guide

I ordered the LS1214L from Grizzly to replace a DeWalt DW716 that I returned and it is super nice. I was hesitant about mail-ordering it b/c of a few reviews about damage during shipping so I checked everything out before signing for the delivery and I'm glad I did. Although there was no damage, Makita does not take any extra care when boxing the unit. In fairness, I don't recall that DeWalt did either (though I purchased it from Home Depot), but I think it's something they both should reconsider now that a lot of their saws are being delivered to their final destination via UPS ground. Something I ran into when putting the saw on it's stand was that it was not locked in the 0 degree bevel position (... or any position) and as I was trying to seat it, the saw collapsed. Except for a couple of unecessary nicks on the blade table insert, no harm was done but I could have easily dropped the saw. Okay, enough about poor packaging. Just installed it on my 10" chopsaw - works absolutely great!!! Bright, hair-thin laser line snaps on with saw, & aligns straight and square to the left edge of my 60-tooth carbide blade. Only minor mods I had to make during installation was to use a thin brass washer to shim between the unit body and saw arbor, and later to add two thicker zinc washers to the mounting bracket of the blade guard so its swing would clear the outer edge of the laser guide body - no big deal in either case. I might suggest that anyone who has had difficulty with a "fat" line or line projection that is not close to the blade may benefit from adding a shim between the laser unit and the arbor face - if there is any void here, you may be "squashing" the unit ring when tightening the arbor bolt, and thus distorting the unit's intended alignment with the plane of the blade; or, warping the unit case such that the laser becomes set in a "wobbled" position and produces a wider line since the emitter is not spinning uniformly.
